Emergency readiness is everyone’s responsibility. You and your community will be much better prepared to manage an emergency if you work together and lead the planning process.
A community response plan aims to ensure that people in your community will be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours of an emergency, because it might take that long for help to reach you. It makes sure the community has access to basic safety needs, including:
No one knows the community better than the people that live and work in it. This is why it is critical that the community takes the lead in the completion of the plan.
Community leaders, representatives of stakeholder organisations, and enthusiastic people from the community should form a working group to complete the planning, and future maintenance of the plan. Taupō District Civil Defence Emergency Management staff are available to support the groups to get started and provide information to help complete the plan.
Preparing for an emergency begins in the home and the workplace - this is where people spend most of their time. People form connections within their neighbourhood, and their workplace, and planning to get your household through an emergency should include the people that you are most likely to be close to.
It is important that households still take the time to create their household plan, and not rely solely on the community response plan, as ensuring you are prepared at home, will in turn support your community to be resilient. Community response planning is one step above readiness in the home and workplace.
A number of communities have already formed a group. These communities are currently completing their planning and would welcome more group members:
Below are communities who have completed their plan. All plans can be viewed and downloaded. These groups are also looking for more members.
If you would like to join any of the groups of a community listed please contact our Senior Emergency Management Advisor.
