The Taupō District has many accommodation options for Supercars from hotels and luxury lodges to campgrounds and backpackers. If you would like to travel and stay in your own self-contained campervans, motorhomes and caravans, here's what you need to know.
Rubbish and waste
Sewage and grey water
You can dispose of your motorhome sewage and grey water holding tanks for free at any of our designated wastewater dump stations open 24 hours a day:
Most commercial campgrounds and holiday parks have dump stations available for guests to use.
Rubbish
At camping sites where no bins are provided please be aware you must take all your rubbish with you as a 'pack it in, pack it out' arrangement is in place to help protect the environment.
You can dispose of your rubbish and recycling at any of our landfill and transfer stations in the Taupō District.

Motorhome parking in Taupō town centre
There is dedicated parking for oversized personal vehicle on Ferry Road in Taupō? Even better, it's easy to navigate to and close to the town centre shops and restaurants.
From the north:
- Turn onto Tongariro Street
- Turn right onto Ferry Road
- Park up at one of the extra-long vehicle parks along the lakefront
From the south:
- Drive along Lake Terrace
- Continue to the right onto Tītīraupenga Street
- Turn left onto Tūwharetoa Street
- Turn left onto Tongariro Street
- Turn right onto Ferry Road.
- Park up at one of the extra-long vehicle parks along the lakefront.
Self-contained Camping Facilities
The Taupō District is a beautiful part of the Central North Island and a great place to explore by campervan or motorhome.
While we're a camping-friendly district, we support responsible camping and encourage the use of commercial camping grounds, Department of Conservation camping areas and our own designated areas.
