Course layout

The course is a bit different from the regular IRONMAN course that we are used to. The action will take place over two days with women racing on Saturday 14 December, and men racing on Sunday 15 December. Locals can expect a busy weekend full of epic IRONMAN action.

The swim course will start at Taupō Yacht Club. The athletes will swim 300m into the water before turning left to start the 1.9km swim course to Rifle Range Road.

Bike course is different from previous IRONMAN events with a 90km loop course taking competitors along State Highway 5 and back along Broadlands Road.

The event finishes with the 21.1km run along the lakefront. It stretches a little bit further than the regular course with a loop by Mapou Road in Rainbow Point and down as far as Ferry Road in Taupō Harbour. Athletes will run the course twice before finishing at Tongariro Domain.

These are the top triathletes in the world. It might take your regular IRONMAN participant, giving it a go, a long time to complete this course, but these triathles will smash it out.

There will be rolling road closures and openings over the two days. This means that as the last triathlete finishes a section, the roads around it will start opening immediately.

Expect the town centre to be busy throughout the weekend, but you will be able to head out and about easily in the afternoons. As soon as we can, we will share more road closures with you.
