Background and next steps
Submissions now closed
Submissions on the key principles to help guide our Recreation and Sport Strategy closed at 4.30pm on Wednesday 22 March 2023. Thank you for all the submissions received.
A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday 4 April, at 10.15am in the Taupō Council Chamber, 107 te Heuheu Street, Taupō, for anyone wanting to speak directly to councillors about their feedback.
Background
Last year we asked you what you think about recreation and sport in our district.
One of the strong messages we got back was that it’s not clear to you or us what Council’s role in recreation and sport should be.
So we figured we need to get right back to the basics and sort out some core principles that can guide us as we consider where and how we should invest, manage and care for our recreation areas and our sports grounds.
We have developed 19 guiding principles over three themes:
- Community reserves
- Community sportsgrounds and facilities
- Supporting recreation and sports organisations
What we’re currently considering:
- How do we connect and care for our network of community reserves? What should our reserves provide?
- What’s the balance between providing space for free recreation such as kicking a ball with your kids, organised events such as triathlons, and organised club sports such as interclub football games?
- How can we make our reserves and sportsgrounds accessible and inclusive so that they meet the needs of our communities? For example, can people get to them if they are in a wheelchair or use a walking frame? If there’s a fee for use, is it affordable?
- How much support should Council provide to clubs and in what circumstances should it invest in club facilities?
- What would you like us to focus on in the short, medium and long term?
Next steps
Strategic Direction and Consultation
After considering your feedback, Council will review and adopt the principles, and areas that Council should focus on first as part of the strategy. These will then guide planning for the community’s recreation and sport assets.
Investment Plan
Council will include this in its planning and business cases for new investment as we work through what our next Long-term Plan may look like. Council will consult on its proposed recreation and sport investment plans as part of its Long-term Plan 2024 – 2034.
