Clearing work to begin at Wharewaka
28 January 2016
Clearing work will begin next week as Taupo District Council moves to bridge the gap between the Lions' Walk just south of Wharewaka Point and the footpath at Five Mile Bay.
It is proposed that the new concrete path will run in the vicinity of the gravel track that is used as an accessway along the lakefront.
Contractors will begin the work on Tuesday, with the creation of a diversion for cyclists and pedestrians. For health and safety reasons, the area will not be accessible to vehicles from Thursday while the work is carried out. Gorse and blackberry will also be removed.
Facilities manager Andrew Boden said the clearing work was the first step toward being able to create the path extension.
Connecting two well-used paths will make it a much more enjoyable experience for cyclists and pedestrians who travel between the two, he said. At the moment it's quite difficult to see where to go.
Vehicle access is expected to be restored by mid-February.
