Enclose, Enfold, Envelop
2 May 2016
What can you do with flax, threads, fabric and recycled paper? More than you think - and Fibres Unlimited is here to show you!
The Taupo District-based group is hosting its new exhibition, Enclose, Enfold, Envelop, at Taupo Museum from this weekend, featuring an eclectic mix of wall art, unique accessories and reinterpretations of traditional fibre work.
Exhibition organiser Maggie Dawson said the name Enclose, Enfold, Envelop is open to interpretation. Some of the work embodies the title literally, with folding, surrounding or covering, and other work captures the essence of it with an emotion or mood, she said.
She said the ideas generated in the discussion about the title led to the creation of artwork using a variety of techniques from painting and dying of fabric and flax weaving to a total reinterpretation of a traditional korowai (cloak).
Fibres Unlimited is a collective that formed in 1996 with the late Joan Bright and Sandy Morrison calling together a group of like-minded individuals with the aim of encouraging each other in their creativity. This year marks 20 years for the group, and it will be its 10th exhibition.
The contributing artists are Aletta Lamprecht, Adri Shaw, Barbara McQuarrie, Caroline McQuarrie, Coralie Skinner, Leigh Motion, Maggie Dawson, Morag Scott, Raewyn Ireland and Ylva Maxwell, all of whom exhibit locally and nationally.
The exhibition runs from May 7 to June 7, with an opening on Friday, May 6 at 5.30pm. The museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupo District residents with proof of address.
