Fifty kilometres of fitness and fun
11 September 2015
Turangi Aquatic Centre has laid a 50km swim challenge down to residents in an effort to encourage them to get fit in time for summer.
The challenge has been named after Margaret Sweeney who was the first woman to swim the 50km from Stump Bay, Turangi to Taupo in the 1950s. Members of the Turangi community and staff will be taking part in the challenge over the next few months, and it is hoped it will become an annual event.
Turangi pool supervisor Suzanne Watson said the challenge was a great way to recognise Margaret Sweeney's impressive feat while encouraging fitness and swimming participation by the Turangi community.
This is a great opportunity for people to increase their fitness and make the most of the fantastic indoor facilities we offer, she said.
There are two categories. Elite swimmers will aim to complete 50km in three months, finishing in late November. Those entering the novice category will aim to complete the task individually or in a group by a combination of running, jogging or swimming the distance by December 7.
A tally board is being kept in a room off reception at Turangi Aquatic Centre, where participants are crossing off their kilometres as they progress. Four Turangi pool staff members and 50 members of the community have registered so far. To sign up, visit Turangi Aquatic Centre or call them on 07 386 8021.
