Get along to road safety expo on Thursday
16 May 2014
Raising the awareness of road safety is the aim of a community road safety expo being held at the Great Lake Centre on Thursday night.
Hosted by Taupo District Council and police, as part of a two-day road safety expo aimed at keeping teens safe on the roads, the community night will feature real people talking about real life experiences.
Road Safety Coordinator Christine Hutchison said traffic crashes were the leading cause of death or serious injury among young New Zealanders, so sharing important information about being safe on the roads was one of the most valuable lessons youth could be given.
"The expo is called The Ripple Effect because it highlights the effect road crashes can have on communities like our own," she said.
One keynote speaker, Brent Laurenson, said the Ripple Effect was a thought provoking, emotionally charged and challenging set of presentations and was a must see for all parents with teenagers.
"These stories illustrate the results of wrong decisions made by passengers and drivers and the grief that is left with family and friends to deal with. Attending this community evening could help make our young people more responsible on the roads and keep them alive," he said.
The community night starts at 6.30pm and is free to attend.
Highlights will include:
- Presentations from the Police, Fire Service and St John.
- Information about how you and your friends can stay safe on the roads.
- Families who have lost loved ones will share their stories.
- How young drivers can get their licence.
- Driving courses and other resources.
