Intersection upgrade gathers momentum
The intersection of Roberts and Ruapehu streets is undergoing a major makeover and the first two corners are starting to take shape.
The intersection serves as a gateway from the lakefront to the town centre and is being upgraded to address security concerns and to encourage people to linger longer in the area.
Work at the Bayley's corner began at the start of the month and is nearly complete, with new street furniture and gardens in place. Paved areas on all corners are being completely reconstructed while temporary walkways provide footpath access for pedestrians.
Work has also begun at the McDonald's corner, with the team upgrading concrete kerbs and laying the foundations for street furniture. Paving on the corner is expected to begin today.
TR Construction is carrying out the work on our behalf and hope to start demolition on the third and fourth corners in the next few weeks. The entire project is expected to be completed in July.
The Roberts and Ruapehu streets intersection is the fourth major CBD intersection to be upgraded in recent years, all featuring lower, less intrusive planted areas and a modern timber, stone and concrete design.
