Taupo District's biggest event, IRONMAN New Zealand, has won an award for its excellence.
The oldest international IRONMAN event, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year, was voted as the Best New Zealand Hosted Major Event at the New Zealand Association of Event Professionals awards last week.
The event has hosted over 55,000 international participants and supporters in New Zealand over its three decades of operation, providing significant economic benefits to the country each year, most of which has been in the Taupo District.
Mayor David Trewavas said he was thrilled for the Ironman team for winning the award, which was a reflection of their hard work.
It's always a huge boost for Taupo when Ironman is held here each year and we look forward to it every time, he said.
IRONMAN is celebrated, iconic, and something our community and visitors embrace so we are all delighted to see it recognised for the outstanding event that it is.
The judging panel for the award said IRONMAN New Zealand had outstanding engagement and involvement of the local Taupo community, 30 consecutive years of continued excellence and a truly immersive experience for athletes and their supporters.
