New deputy mayor appointed
27 May 2014
Fourth-term councillor Barry Hickling has been appointed deputy mayor.
Mayor David Trewavas made the announcement at today's monthly council meeting and said Mr Hickling had been a long term councillor who was rock steady and well respected.
Mr Hickling was also the second highest polling candidate at the October 2013 elections. All councillors had supported his appointment, Mr Trewavas said.
"Councillor Hickling has the whole Taupō District at heart and I am sure he will do the job very well."
In accepting the role, Mr Hickling said he was looking forward to supporting Mr Trewavas and his fellow councillors as the deputy mayor.
"I hope with my experience I will do the job justice. I consider myself very privileged to be serving the community in this role."
The deputy mayor position had been vacant since the resignation of Keith Crate in February due to ill health.
