New reserve committee to be formed

A new partnership has been formed between Ngati Turangitukua and Taup0 District Council to oversee the creation of a Turangi reserve management plan.

The formation of the committee was confirmed at the Taupo District Council meeting this week. It will be made up of three council and three Ngati Turangitukua representatives. The committee will oversee the creation of management plan for reserves returned to Ngati Turangitukua ownership but under council management.

Councillors Maggie Stewart and Barry Hickling will be joined by Turangi Tongariro Community Board member Wally van der Aa representing the council. Ngaiterangi Smallman of Ngati Turangitukua Charitable Trust, Hine Mohi and Tina Porou were nominated by Ngati Turangitukua to represent the hapū.

Ms Stewart said the formation of the committee would help ensure the new reserve management plan reflected Ngati Turangitukua's aspirations for the reserves. By working together we can create a plan that combines the best interests of Ngati Turangitukua, the council and the community, she said.
