Pihanga Clubrooms to be demolished
Work will begin on Monday 15 January to demolish the Pihanga Clubrooms in Turangi.
The clubrooms, on Turangitukua Reserve, were identified as containing asbestos last year, posing a health and safety risk to the community. Investigations are underway to replace the building with a temporary facility to serve the sports groups who use the park. Taupo District Council will be working with these groups to identify their requirements.
The building and up to 200mm of topsoil will be removed and safely disposed of to ensure there is no residual asbestos contamination. It is hoped that temporary replacement facilities will be in place before winter.
