Plans afoot to replace Turangi turtle
30 October 2014
Turangi mall's iconic turtle was found to be damaged beyond repair when it was removed to allow for revitalisation works to take place this week but plans are already underway to install a worthy replacement.
The third stage of the Turangi revitalisation project is set to transform the town centre and create vibrancy. Once the project is completed there will be extensive landscaping, a raised area for performances, an area to display pieces of local artwork that reflect Turangi's history, and a new play area. New lighting and seating will also be installed.
Policy and operations group manager Gareth Green said the concrete turtle sculpture was much-loved by the community and would be sadly missed.
The turtle in many ways was a focal point of the town centre and a creator of many childhood memories, including my own, during the almost 50 years it took pride of place in the mall, he said.
While we appreciate something with such significant sentimental value to all of us cannot simply be replaced, we are investigating options to find a suitable alternative. We will explore options with the Turangi Tongariro Community Board over the next few weeks to formulate a plan going forward, Mr Green said.
