Restoration for Taupo’s Reid’s Carving
Restoration for Taupo's Reid's Carving
5 September 2014
The Maori carving on the lakefront that frames a beautiful view of Lake Taupo will be taken down for maintenance this month.
The carving, known as Reid's Carving, stands at the corner of Tongariro Street and Ferry Road. It was built in 1961 by carver Tene Waitere and was originally located on Tongariro Domain at the entrance to what was then the town's sportsfield.
It has been refurbished in the past but has not been touched for about a decade. In that time it has been damaged by the elements and general wear and tear. The paintwork is patchy and some parts are damaged. Any sections deemed beyond repair will be replaced.
Taupo District Council district manager of parks and public spaces John Ridd said a lot of work was required to bring the carving back up to a good standard. It was easier to take it down and away from the elements to fix it up as fast as possible, he said. We're going to sand it and repaint it, but also assess it for water damage which may take more time to repair, he said. We want to bring back the vibrancy of this fantastic carving - it is part of our history and something we can be proud of.
The carving symbolises a woman, Lucy Rongoheikume Rickit, who was a descendant of the tribes Tuhourangi of Rotorua and Tuwharetoa of Taupo. The carving commemorates the great Maori leaders who founded the two tribes and how they came together.
Signage would be erected at the site explaining the absence of the carving when it was taken away, Mr Ridd said. It was hoped work would be completed by summer so it could be returned to the site in time for the holidays.
