Straight to Taupo for new citizens
26 June 2014
When South African Garth Lindsay moved to New Zealand, living in Taupo was the only option.
The visual arts teacher at Taupo Nui-a-Tia College was one of 14 new citizens welcomed into the district by Mayor David Trewavas in the Taupo District Council chamber today. Mr Lindsay's wife and two children were also welcomed as new citizens.
I think it was just a lifestyle change for us, he said. We wanted a place we could raise our kids in and this place has so much to offer our children, so we're very grateful for that.
Mr Lindsay said Taupo was nice and quiet and it was everything he hoped it would be.
Others at the ceremony included new citizens from Romania, France, Fiji and South Africa.
Mr Trewavas said it was great to be able to welcome a group with a diverse range of skills and attributes into the district. New citizens add to the cultural mix of our community and that is part of what makes our district so special, he said.
