Volcanic fun these school holidays
30 June 2014
If creating miniature erupting volcanoes sounds like your child's idea of fun, now is your chance to let them experience it without having to clean up the mess!
The school holiday programme at Taupo Library and Taupo Museum this July includes volcano-making and a whole new range of fun activities planned for the winter holidays, which start Monday.
Erupting volcanoes will be created using baking soda and vinegar in a fun, safe environment at the museum. All ages can register to participate and it will be on at the museum from 10.30am until 11.30am on Friday, July 11. The event will also be on at Mangakino Library from 1pm-2pm the same day.
Library and museum manager Luisa Haines said the team had come up with a range of activities that should appeal to children of all ages. These holidays we've got fairies, mermaids, knights, antiques, treehouse designing, knitting and even butter-making, she said. We encourage children and their parents to come and experience these awesome activities. It's going to be a very entertaining school holidays for our kids.
Children can also visit the new Matariki exhibition, Te Haerenga - The Journey, at the museum, with specific activities for kids. They can learn some basic Te Reo and get involved in the interactive elements of the exhibition, which is themed on navigation, Ms Haines said.
There is also plenty going on at Turangi Library, with a games day, crafts, flax-weaving, and the chance to make a bird feeder with Turangi Bird Rescue's Carol Harwood. All activities at Turangi Library are suited to five to 12 year olds.
All the activities are free, but some require registration to ensure everyone is catered for. Contact the libraries or museum to secure a spot, or find more information and the full programme on the Library and Museum's News & Events page.
