Wastewater overflow in Turangi

A pipe blocked by fat and wet wipes has caused wastewater to overflow into the stormwater system in Kohineheke Recreation Reserve in Turangi.

Contractors were onsite carrying out repairs as soon as the overflow was identified, and the spill was greatly diluted by recent heavy rain.

This is a wetland area and samples have been taken to asses any potential contamination. Signs are in place and the community is asked to avoid contact with stormwater in the area.
