Road upgrade for Miro Street
Work to rehabilitate the section of Miro Street between the Crown Road intersection and No. 30 (Taupo Smash Repairs) begins on 1 February.
The work will see damaged kerbing and channelling replaced and extensive work done to replace the existing pavement and road surface with a more durable one.
Infrastructure Manager Denis Lewis said the existing road surface would be completely removed and a new asphalt surface installed to better cope with the heavy vehicles that regularly use the road.
“This part of Miro Street currently has a road surface depth of only 200mm, on a pumice base,” Mr Lewis said. “While this was considered adequate at the time of construction in 1964, the heavy vehicle traffic that now regularly uses this section of road has taken its toll on the pavement. To provide a longer term solution our contractor will be removing the current pavement and then reinstating so that the new surface has a really solid base.
We’re expecting this work being undertaken by contractors Downer NZ to be completed in about eight weeks, weather permitting, and they will be working with the local business owners to reduce the inconvenience as much as possible. There will be some heavy machinery onsite so are asking the community to use caution and follow the guidance of the traffic management team.”
