Get ready - be prepared
The heavy rain and flooding that has impacted so many people around the North Island this long weekend is a reminder for us to all be prepared.
While we’ve been a little more fortunate than other areas, we’ve still seen some pretty extreme weather across our district – and more rain is forecast from late tomorrow (Tuesday) through until Thursday.
Given how saturated the ground is already, additional rain is likely to cause more slips and land subsidence. Rivers are still running high and the lake level is very high, so gusty winds will likely cause large waves near the lakeshore. Surface flooding may occur in heavy rain.
Take the time now to make and practise an emergency plan, make a grab bag and have emergency supplies available.
Here’s a few things we can all do to be ready.
Slips/land subsidence:
- Watch the land around where you live for signs of increased threat. Look at the hillsides around your home for any signs of land movement (like rockfall, small landslides or debris flows) and any trees that start to “tilt” over time.
- Keep gutters, downpipes and drains free of dirt, leaves and other blockages. Trim back or remove vegetation blocking drains and gutters.
- Regularly empty septic tanks if you have one on your property.
- Check retaining wall drainage for blockages and water build-up behind the wall.
- Regularly check and clear drains.
If flooding happens:
- Put safety first. Don’t take any chances. Act quickly if you see rising water.
- Floods and flash floods can happen quickly. If you see rising water, do not wait for official warnings. Head for higher ground and stay away from floodwater.
- Do not try to walk, play, swim, or drive in floodwater: even water just 15 centimetres deep can sweep you off your feet, and half a metre of water will carry away most vehicles.
