UPDATE: New Year's Day Big Bang CANCELLED - unsafe to proceed

That pesky wind has picked up again this afternoon and bought with it strong swells in the lake which means it's unsafe to proceed with the fireworks tonight.

We're so sorry to have to call off the show but with the fireworks to be launched from a barge on the lake, it's simply not safe to go ahead with the Big Bang this evening.

While this isn't the update we were hoping for, we will now look at a suitable community event at a later date where we can use the fireworks.

**UPDATE: Big Bang postponed to New Year's Day with one spectacular fireworks display at 9.30pm **

Get ready for an awesome start to 2025 with a spectacular Big Bang fireworks event at 9.30pm on New Year's Day (Wednesday 1 January).

That right, we're combining the Mini Bang and Big Bang into one massive show! There will not be a separate fireworks display at midnight.

While the wind and lake conditions are looking more promising for this evening, we'll keep a close eye on things and if it's unsafe to go ahead we'll get the word out by 7pm.

The Big Bang is back!

On Tuesday 31 December we’re holding the annual New Year’s Eve Big Bang Fireworks Display at Tapuaeharuru Reserve on Roberts Street.

In addition to the big show at midnight, we’re holding a Mini Bang fireworks event at 9.30pm, perfect timing for whānau (families) and young tamariki (children).

Did you know?

Fireworks have been around for about 2000 years and are still very popular today!

  • The fireworks we use were made in Aotearoa, New Zealand, using imported and local sourced biodegradable and recyclable materials. They contain no heavy metals, to reduce harm to our precious taiao (environment).
  • The Big Bang fireworks are launched from a barge on the lake, giving you plenty of safe community viewing points on the lakefront.
  • Lake Taupō Coastguard will patrol the area to keep everyone, including boaties and swimmers, at a safe distance from the barge.
  • No alcohol, smoking, vaping, or dogs are allowed. Just bring your whānau and good vibes.

Road closure

Traffic management will be in place throughout the event. Roberts Street will be closed from 7am on Tuesday 31 December and reopen at 2am on Wednesday 1 January 2025.

Safety and thank you

Thanks to the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board, the Lake Taupō Harbourmaster, Lake Taupō Coastguard, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand for their knowledge and expertise, which help ensure the event is safe for our whenua (land), wai (water) and whānau.
