Air service cuts ‘bolt out of the blue’
Air service cuts bolt out of the blue'
11 November 2014
News Air New Zealand is to cut services from Taupo to Wellington next year has been met with deep disappointment by the district's Mayor David Trewavas.
Air New Zealand representatives met with Mr Trewavas this afternoon to unveil plans to progressively upgrade to 50 seat aircraft on flights from Taupo to Auckland but cut services to the capital.
I am extremely disappointed given previous discussions had indicated this would be an issue we could face in five to six years time, said Mr Trewavas.
Since I have been in office, I have been in constant contact with Air New Zealand and no indication had been given that this issue was on the immediate horizon, he said. It has come as a bolt out of the blue.
There was expected to be flow on effects from the decision, particularly when the Taupo District was a notable visitor and conference destination.
Only last week Great Lake Taupo was announced as best New Zealand destination in the 19th annual Golden Backpack Awards which will only lift our profile further, said Mr Trewavas.
We invest a large amount of money marketing ourselves as a visitor and events destination, and host a huge number of national and international tourists every year. Add to that we are home to the number one golf course in the country, have iconic venues like Huka and Poronui lodges, and host several conferences every year and you could forgive us for feeling as though we've been slapped in the face, he said.
Air New Zealand has always been a valued partner in servicing the Taupo District airport which is 50 per cent owned by the Crown.
I would like to reassure our community that as a Council we will be working extensively with Air New Zealand to ensure our remaining air services are retained and that they will service our growing business community in the most effective way, said Mr Trewavas.
