Art From A Different View
22 October 2015
A collection of art by a uniquely talented group of young Tauhara College students will be on display at Taupo Museum from Saturday.
Art From A Different View is an exhibition by the college's special needs unit. The class includes 17 students aged from 12 to 21 with a variety of learning, communication and physical needs.
Teacher Michelle Pointon said the idea for the exhibition came out of participating in various aspects of the local community. The class often visits the museum to view the art displays and art is used to develop and extend students at school.
Most of our designs are related to topics we have been exploring in class, allowing us to explore and develop literacy and numeracy concepts. We often create art using natural items or by upcycling donated items, she said.
Ms Pointon said art was something everyone could participate in at their own developmental level.
For many of our students the process is more exciting and important than the product. They enjoy the visual effects they can create as well as the sounds that some processes produce and the tactile involvement in the creative process.
The class has been building the collection for the exhibition since the start of the year.
Our students have created their artwork independently with modelling or minimal physical prompts if required due to their need, Ms Pointon said. We are very excited to share our creative talents with the community and thank the Taupo Museum for the opportunity to hold our own art exhibition.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 24 and runs to Monday, November 30. Taupo Museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupō District residents with proof of address.
