Beach, Bush and Beyond
18 November 2014
Venture off the beaten track with a new exhibition by Taupo artist Roger Dowman.
Dowman's exhibition Beach, Bush and Beyond opens on Saturday and runs until December 16. The artist's oil paintings have been inspired by views he has seen over many years spent hunting and tramping in New Zealand's bush and back country.
His time in these remote settings has given him a sense of belonging to open spaces and sparsely populated parts of the country, and his love of outdoors is reflected in each art work. Rather than paint large, grand views, I like to take a more focussed, smaller scene and add colour and detail, Dowman said. Travelling extensively and visiting a lot of countries has given me an appreciation of what New Zealand has to offer.
Dowman is a self-taught artist who has enjoyed studying other artists' work and techniques. He has sold work locally and completed several commissions. This is his first solo exhibition.
Bush, Beach and Beyond is on display in the Niven Room at Taupo Museum until December 16. All of the work on display will be for sale.
The museum is open seven days a week from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupo District residents with proof of address.
