Big weekend in the Taupo District
7 September 2015
It was a big weekend in the Taupo District with thousands of people taking part in a host of events on offer.
Taupo District Council events manager Steve Giles said there were no vacancy signs up at most accommodation providers over the weekend and it was estimated the huge number helped boost the local economy by up to $280,000 a day.
The long list of national and regional events included secondary school sports tournaments, the New Zealand Junior Rugby Tournament, the Hoka One One Kinloch Off Road Challenge, motorsport races, equestrian, the central region BMX winter meet, the national hockey league and the Laughing Samoans comedy show.
It was really exciting to see the diversity of events that were on offer and I believe this only strengthens our position as the events capital of New Zealand, Mr Giles said.
Even more pleasing was that these events were held outside the school holidays and peak visitor season and that allowed for an additional boost to the economy at a time of year when things are traditionally quite quiet, he said.
Feedback from local clubs, community organisations, retailers and the hospitality and accommodation sectors was that most businesses had a great trading weekend.
A big thanks must go to all those involved who worked tirelessly to attract and host these events and welcome these visitors to our district, said Mr Giles.
Our ability to throw out the welcome mat and ensure visitors to our district have a good time keeps them coming back and that can only be good for our district's future.
