Community input sought on new alcohol bylaw
The community is being invited to have their say on a new alcohol control bylaw being proposed for the Taupō District.
The existing Taupō District Alcohol Control Bylaw expires on December 18 this year, and changes in legislation require its review.
Senior policy advisor Hilary Samuel said the new bylaw was proposing the removal or modification of some of the existing alcohol prohibition areas. This included a reduction in size of the town centre area covered by the permanent weekend alcohol prohibition, and the addition of some new alcohol prohibition areas including the main Lake Terrace beach for the New Year period. Other points of interest include the ability for Council to make temporary alcohol prohibitions for large-scale events and changes to ensure certified self-contained vehicles are not included within most alcohol prohibition areas.
Mrs Samuel said the Council particularly wanted community input about the possibility of a permanent alcohol ban at Otumuheke Stream. "An alcohol ban at Otumuheke Stream (Spa Park bathing area) is a specific issue we would like to hear the community's view on as we have anecdotal evidence of alcohol issues there. We want to hear if this is really affecting people's enjoyment of the area, and if they have specific examples of incidents they have witnessed," she said.
Submissions are now being sought from the community on the bylaw and need to be received by November 2, with hearings to be held on November 19.
