Decisions made on Kinloch reserve and boat ramp
15 October 2015
A plan will be developed for Kinloch Lakefront Reserve to allow parking for vehicles while still protecting the roots of a group of notable trees.
Taupo District councillors last week made the decision at an extraordinary council meeting where submitters were given the chance to share their views on the management of Kinloch Lakefront Reserve, the future of Scotsman's Ramp and the proposal for a kiosk at Kinloch Domain.
After considering submissions, Councillors asked staff to develop a detailed plan for the reserve that would protect the four-metre root zone around the poplars in the reserve by using planting, rocks and the installation of bollards and furniture. However, there would still be room for vehicle parking on both sides of the reserve.
They also requested some replanting, the introduction of traffic calming measures and an area for mountain bikers to stop away from parked vehicles. A chain at one end of the reserve will be removed and the road extended. Once developed, the plan will be brought back to councillors with costings for consideration.
Councillors also agreed for Scotsman's Ramp to remain open with increased monitoring to ensure better use.
Group manager of policy and operations Gareth Green said concrete bollards, improved signage and improved monitoring would be in place over the summer period. The feedback we have received indicates Scotsman's Ramp is a valued community asset for Kinloch and they want access to continue, he said.
The Kinloch Reserve Management Plan is set to be amended to allow a mobile kiosk to sell services and goods that support the community's use of the Great Lake Trails. Councillors decided the kiosk would be beneficial to the huge number of mountain bikers who used the trails. A licence will be granted to a vendor to operate from the domain on a trial basis until the end of October 2016.
