Failing water main to be replaced
7 May 2015
A water main that has burst four times in Taupo in recent weeks is being replaced ahead of schedule to ensure a steady water supply for residents and businesses.
The main runs along Lake Terrace and frequent bursts in the week leading up to ANZAC weekend, lead to some properties being cut off from water for a few hours while contractors worked to repair the damage.
Since these incidents, Taupo District Council has reduced water pressure through the pipe to reduce further problems.
Infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said staff had evaluated the options and a decision had been made to replace the main now instead of waiting until it was originally planned for later in the year.
We understand how important it is to our residents and businesses to have a constant, uninterrupted water supply as many rely on this service to go about their days and carry out their services, Mr Lewis said.
The main supplies properties on the section of Lake Terrace that runs from Rifle Range Road to Mere Road.
Work is due to start in the next few days and is expected to take two months to complete. A temporary supply will be provided to those affected during construction.
Unfortunately this project will cause some intermittent traffic disruption and may inconvenience residents and business owners, but we hope to keep this to a minimum, Mr Lewis said. We will be working closely with all those affected and hope to have the work completed quickly.
