Free composting workshops to help green Taupo District
21 September 2015
Do you want to minimise your green waste and save money but don't know where to start? Taupo District Council is holding a series of free workshops to show you how it's done.
Vouchers for discounts on selected composting equipment have been available to the community since mid-2013 and the workshops are running in conjunction with this initiative. They will be held monthly from October.
The council is working with the Taupo Community Gardens to coordinate the workshops. The gardens grow fresh produce for the local food bank and support sustainable living and waste minimisation.
Infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said the workshops would be a great way to show those new to composting, or interested in it, how simple it was. We want to get as much food and green waste out of landfills as we can, and composting is an easy way for households to help out and do their bit, Mr Lewis said.
Taupo Community Gardens Trust chairperson and coordinator Anja Schaar said the organisation wanted to get involved so it could help equip the community with important waste minimisation skills. The more people who compost at home, the less that goes into landfill. Plus it's good for the garden! she said.
Ms Schaar said the community gardens had a large composting operation that incorporated traditional composting equipment as well as worm farms. Her team had ample experience and knowledge and would be able to answer any questions the community had about composting.
The first of the workshop will be held at 3pm on Saturday, October 3 at Taupo Community Gardens near the Waipahihi sportsground on Richmond Ave. Spaces are limited, so people can register by contacting the council on 07 376 0899 or visiting www.taupo.govt.nz/composting.
Workshops are being held on the first Saturday of every month until May next year. The full schedule of workshops is on the council's website. All those who register and go along to the workshops go into the draw to win a composter.
