Front of mall reopens in Turangi
18 November 2014
The front of Turangi's mall has reopened ahead of schedule, allowing residents and visitors to experience the redesigned area three weeks early.
The area has been under construction since September as part of the third stage of the Turangi town centre revitalisation. The rear of the mall is also being refurbished and is expected to be completed by mid-December.
New additions to the front of the mall include timber seating, extensive landscaping and a pedestrian crossing. Taupo District Council strategic projects manager Andrew Boden coordinated the project and said the team was happy to complete work quickly to allow the community to get in and see the changes.
The front of the mall has been given a fresh, new look and we think the designers and contractors have done a great job, he said. It's markedly different to what was there previously and is definitely more vibrant and inviting.
Work at the rear of the mall is still continuing. It includes an upgrade to the power infrastructure, landscaping, lighting improvements and the building of a stage. A drinking fountain is also being installed.
The revitalisation project began last year with a makeover of the entrance into town from State Highway 1 and Pihanga Road. The entrance refurbishment was followed by the creation of the new skate park and play area in Te Kapua Park near the Genesis Energy Turangi Aquatic Centre.
