Governor-General to visit Taupo District
5 April 2016
Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae and Lady Janine Mateparae will be welcomed to the Taupo District by Mayor David Trewavas when they arrive this afternoon.
Their Excellencies will be touring the district as part of their regular visits to the provinces. The Governor-General is a descendent of Ngati Tuwharetoa and this is the first time he has visited the Taupo District in an official capacity.
While here, they will visit the Tongariro National Trout Centre, a Taupo Beef farm in Tihoi to learn about the Lake Taupo Protection Trust, GNS Science at the Wairakei Research Centre and other local industry. They will also take in Taupo Boat Harbour, meet students from schools involved in the Kids Greening Taupo project and take a scenic cruise on Lake Taupo with Destination Great Lake Taupo and representatives of the local tourism and hospitality sector.
Mr Trewavas will visit Hirangi Marae alongside Sir Tumu te Heuheu this afternoon when the Governor-General is welcomed. Tomorrow evening, Mr Trewavas will meet with the Governor-General alongside the Mayor of Ruapehu District Council and the chair of Waikato Regional Council. It was an honour to host the Governor-General in the district, he said.
It's fantastic we're able to show His Excellency some of the highlights of our district and give him and Lady Janine a sense of how we do business here and what we have to offer, Mr Trewavas said.
