Is your child a budding artist? Are they enthusiastic about keeping the Taupo District clean and green? Boy, do we have the competition for them!
We are waging a war on litter and want kids to design an A4 poster with an 'IT'S NOT OK TO LITTER' message.
Ideas from the competition will be used to help clean up our district and the winner will receive a $400 kids' bike voucher kindly donated by Top Gear Cycles. There are plenty of spot prizes too!
Litter campaigner Carol Lamb is supporting the poster campaign, and believes it is important children spread the anti-litter message.
"We need our children to teach others to find our environmental heart," she said. "Our sports clubs and fields are being polluted with litter. The amount of litter being tossed out of car windows is horrendous. Every exit road from Taupo is affected." Carol has collected 3.5 tonnes of litter over 570 hours volunteering for the past 17 months.
The posters were a great way to spark an interest in environmental protection of our district within the community, she said.
"We've got to start somewhere and we're hoping the kids can encourage their parents not to toss their litter on the side of the road," she said. "It'll be great to see the kids' artwork - they might come up with something totally out of the box, something quirky that will get the message through."
Drop your child's entry into your nearest Taupo District Council office or email it to communications@taupo.govt.nz. Entries close at 5pm on Friday, August 11.
