Keeping the Taupo District beautiful
23 September 2014
More than 300 kilograms of rubbish and recycling was collected by volunteers around the district during Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week last week.
In addition to programmed rubbish collection, Taupo District Council staff were out in force collecting rubbish to do their bit for the week, which ran from September 14-20. During the week, 90kg of rubbish was removed from the Poihipi roadside and 50kg was picked up along the lakefront between Waitahanui and Wharewaka.
The council teams joined a number of other groups doing their bit to keep the Taupo District beautiful, with volunteers from the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association and The Warehouse chipping in. Collectively 61 volunteers helped to remove 340kg of rubbish and recycling from Taupo alone. Classes from Mangakino Area School and Whakamaru School also collected rubbish to help beautify their areas.
The council provided gloves and rubbish bags for groups taking part in Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week and disposed of the rubbish free of charge
District manager of parks and public spaces John Ridd said he was impressed with the response. It's great to see so many members of our community invested in making our district look clean and tidy, he said. Hopefully we can continue with this attitude throughout the year and all do our bit to keep it green.
