Kimono Revisited
13 August 2014
A fascination with the kimono has culminated in a new exhibition from New Zealand artist Maxine Parkin-Jones that will be on display at Taupo Museum from Saturday.
Kimono Revisited is Ms Parkin-Jones' third exhibition focussing on the traditional Japanese garment, however this one has a point of difference in that it's made from recycled materials. The exhibition has been created out of recycled clothing, damask tablecloths, old obis, leather and kimonos.
In one of her previous exhibitions, Ms Parkin-Jones featured canvases exploring the Orient and these canvases have been cut up and reshaped into small kimono for this new exhibition.
Ms Parkin-Jones started her career as a freelance visual merchandiser and fibre artist. Exhibitions officer Christine Potter said the kimono art is an extension of Ms Parkin-Jones' continuing attraction to and fascination with textiles and fibres including pure cotton, silk and hemps. She is always pushing the boundaries with her art, discovering new techniques and using new materials, Ms Potter said.
Maxine has exhibited throughout Australia, New Zealand, Italy, the United Kingdom and the Middle East. Her work can be found in foyers, restaurants and both private and corporate collections throughout the world.
Kimono Revisited opens at Taupo Museum on August 17. Taupō Museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupo District residents with proof of address.
