Take the time to learn some Te Reo next week to celebrate Maori Language Week July 21-27.
This year, the kaupapa or theme is Te Kupu o te Wiki - The Word of the Week. The idea is to highlight a new word each week for fifty weeks. Schools, communities and organisations are encouraged to introduce these words within their school and working environments.
For most New Zealanders, the Maori language is our most significant point of difference and is something all Kiwis can identify with. It's important for us to celebrate this and Maori Language Week is a great reason to get to know one of our national languages.
In the Taupo District we have plenty of Maori place and street names to practise our pronunciation on - Mangakino, Nukuhau, Waipahihi, Tauhara, Pukawa and Motuoapa are just a few of the beautiful Maori place names we have here.
Use what you have and keep improving on your pronunciation of our district's unique place names and remember - any time is a good time for Te Reo Maori!
