Mua Ki Muri - Looking Back to the Future
18 April 2016
Experience the world of print making from a Maori perspective with Mua Ki Muri the new exhibition by Toi Whakataa, the Maori Print Collective.
The exhibition at Taupo Museum starts this Saturday and is a physical reflection of a recent wānanga (meeting or conference) at Poukura Marae on the shores of Lake Taupo to mark 10 years since the creation of the collective.
Exhibition curator and contributing artist Vanessa Edwards said the wānanga was spent creating, discussing and challenging the perceptions of what Maori print making is.
It was an important and timely gathering that saw the majority of the original ropu (group) and some newer faces come together to re-engage in the korero and reinforce our commitment to the kaupapa, she said.
The collective was hosted by Ngati Parekaawa and the group was warmly welcomed to practice their art. This exhibition is an acknowledgement of this gathering, the place, the people who looked after us and of the commitment of the artists who attended, Ms Edwards said.
She said as Māori printmakers, they chose print processes that expressed and explored their individuality as a people and told their stories. The show will feature the print works of Gabrielle Belz, Faith McManus, Sam Farquhar, Alexis Neal, Natalie Couch, Keatley Hopkins, Jasmine Horton, Maude Cook-Davies, Raewyn Graham, Charlotte Graham, Simon Kaan and Vanessa Edwards.
The exhibition runs from Saturday, April 23 to June 13. The museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupo District residents with proof of address.
