New warning signage for swimmers’ protection
New warning signage for swimmers' protection
22 October 2014
New signs have been installed in two dangerous spots along the Waikato River ahead of summer to warn people against swimming in the hope of saving lives.
Taupo District Council staff put the signs up at the riverbanks at Riverside Park and Spa Thermal Park in an effort to reduce the likelihood of drowning due to strong currents and undertows and deep cold water and submerged rocks. Two people have drowned in the river in the past two years.
District manager of parks and public spaces John Ridd said although the river was a beautiful location, the water there moved quickly and often caught people unaware. It was hoped the signs would deter people from using the area as a swimming spot.
We have so many other, safer places to swim in our district that are equally beautiful and handy to town, he said. We are doing our best to protect our community and our visitors and hope people help themselves by avoiding swimming at these two spots.
Mr Ridd said there was a lot of discussion around the safety of the river following the drownings and the council wanted to make positive changes in people's attitudes toward the safety of the river. These signs will encourage people to think before they swim and hopefully save lives, he said.
