New wastewater pump station for Five Mile Bay
12 May 2016
A project to install a new wastewater pump station and pipeline in Five Mile Bay aims to reduce nitrogen discharge into the lake and create a more efficient wastewater system.
Taupo District Council is constructing the underground pump station in council-owned land reserved for utilities between State Highway 1 and Mahuta Road. The pipeline will run to Tawhaa Street along State Highway 1, along the lakefront to Wharewaka Reserve, and up to the Victory Drive pump station. It will service properties currently connected to the Waitahanui and Five Mile Bay wastewater scheme.
The council is carrying out the work to allow it to meet conditions under its resource consent with Waikato Regional Council. The project will also see the closure of the Waitahanui wastewater treatment plant.
Infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said a number of trees have been removed to allow the work to take place, but the area would be replanted in a few weeks.
We are committed to ensuring we preserve and improve our natural environment with the replanting of trees, he said. We are aware the project may cause some disruption for residents, but hope to have it completed as fast as possible.
The project was identified in the Long-term Plan 2015-2015 and is being carried out by contractors Spartan Construction. It is expected to be completed in July.
