An exhibition that brings together photography and poetry to offer a new and surprising view of New Zealand's history is set to launch at Taupo Museum next week.
The exhibition, Young Country, features nineteenth century photography by William Williams, a Railways employee who worked and photographed around the country. Exhibitions officer Kerence Stephen said the photographs reflect the raw beauty of New Zealand's evolving landscape.
"We're so lucky to have these photographs on display - they are the type of images that make you want to look again and again to explore all the detail," she said.
Uniquely, the exhibition presents the images in the form of contemporary albumen prints made specifically for the show by New Zealand photographer Wayne Barrar.
The poetry that will accompany the images has been written by New Zealand poet Kerry Hines, and has been written to run alongside a selection of photographs.
"The poems consider the meanings behind some of the photographs and explore what Williams may have been trying to capture on camera," Ms Stephen said.
Young Country is being brought to Taupo Museum by the Friends of the Taupo Museum.
The exhibition runs from Saturday, December 17 to Monday, February 6. The museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm throughout the summer with the exception of Christmas Day when it will be closed. Entry is free to children and Taupo District residents with proof of address.
