Pizza boxes now recyclable in the Taupo District
30 January 2015
Pizza boxes can now be recycled in the Taupo District, meaning awkwardly stuffing them into rubbish bags has come to an end!
Taupo District Council contractors will now pick up pizza boxes alongside plastics, paper, cans, tins and other cardboard as part of the kerbside collection service as another step toward the council achieving its waste minimisation goals.
Asset manager of stormwater and solid waste Brent Aitken said previously pizza boxes were not accepted because of food residue, but they could now be recycled if residents made sure there was no food left in the box when put out for recycling.
We know Taupo District residents want to recycle and are making an active effort to do so, Mr Aitken said.
The addition of pizza boxes to our recycling service is sure to make life easier for our community and is making our district a more sustainable place to live.
Residents in urban areas will also be receiving a black glass only' bin sometime over the next few months. These are being delivered by the contractor, Envirowaste Services, to improve efficiency with sorting in the recycling process. Contactors currently empty 22,000 recycling bins each week across the district.
