Poihipi Road widening work getting underway
3 February 2016
Contractors are about to start work reconstructing and widening some areas of Poihipi Road.
Infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said work would be carried out on a one kilometre stretch 1.5 kilometres from the Taupo end of the road, and on another 500 metre section about four kilometres from town. It is expected to start later this week and take about two months to complete.
Mr Lewis said drivers could expect some delays during the work as at times traffic would be reduced to one lane.
We made a commitment last year in our long term plan to undertake a number of projects to improve safety on key cycle and heavy traffic routes, and this work is part of that said Mr Lewis.
We appreciate there will be some short term inconvenience to road users but it is necessary to realise some long term benefits, he said.
The contract has been let to roading company Inframax Limited for $845,000.
