Prestigious Emirates Melbourne Cup coming to Taupo
18 June 2015
Taupo has been chosen as one of four New Zealand destinations to play host to the 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup next month.
Mayor David Trewavas said the council was honoured that Taupo had been chosen to host the premier racing trophy, and the events team were working hard to ensure its arrival would be celebrated in style.
We're delighted that this iconic trophy is visiting Taupo, Mayor David Trewavas said. While it's known as the race that stops a nation' it could equally be referred to as the race that stops two nations, such is New Zealand's passion for the Melbourne Cup, Mr Trewavas said. It is also fitting it is coming to Taupo as our own racing club celebrates its 50-year anniversary this year.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup will arrive in Taupo on Sunday 26 July, where it will be on display to the public between 9am and 11am at Roberts Street Reserve. This will be a unique opportunity for the Taupo community to get up close and personal with the prestigious trophy, which is valued at $175,000 AUD. People would be able to have their photo taken with the trophy and go in the draw to win a trip for two to the great race itself, which will be hosted by the Victoria Racing Club at Flemington racecourse on November 3 at Emirates Melbourne Cup Day this year.
In the afternoon, the Cup will be centre stage at a fundraising event at the Lake Taupo Hilton, with all proceeds going to the Lake Taupo Hospice.
In total, the People's Cup' will visit 33 towns across Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia as part of the thirteenth annual tour.
The cup will also visit Auckland, Cambridge and Wellington while on this side of the Tasman.
