Proposed changes to speed limits

Taupo District Council is proposing several changes to speed limits in the district.

Following the release of the New Zealand Transport Authority's Speed Management Guide in November 2016, council undertook a review of local limits and is now seeking input from the community on its proposed changes.

Policy Manager Nick Carroll said speed limit changes are proposed for Western Bays, Mangakino, Kinloch, Acacia Bay and Taupo. The changes address concerns that have been raised by the community or affect areas that have a history of traffic issues, he said.

"We're proposing some speed limit changes to recognise the way some of our roads are now used, and to make sure the speed limits on our roads are safe and appropriate. Locals know their roads best, and they know how they're used and what the risks are, so we want your feedback and ideas."

"People are also welcome to raise other roads they think should be reviewed or have the speed limit changed. This feedback will inform the development of our speed management plan in 2019, which will consider how some other road networks in the district can be made safer."

Proposed changes include reducing Lake Terrace from 100 to 80km/h from Rainbow Point, reducing Napier Rd from 80 to 50km/h at the bottom (including Kiddle Dr), and from 100 to 80 km/h above DeBretts (including Crown Rd), as well as reducing the Acacia Bay Straight from 100 to 80km/h, extending the 50km/h sections on either side, and reducing Wakeman Rd from 70 to 50km/h.
