Reid's carving restoration
9 March 2015
The restoration of the carving that frames a stunning view of Lake Taupo is complete.
The waharoa or gateway, known as Reid's Carving, is now back in place on the corner of Tongariro Street and Ferry Road on the Taupo lakefront.
Battered by the elements since its installation in 1969, the paintwork was patchy and some parts were damaged. It was taken down for restoration in September last year and rededicated in February.
It was carved by renowned carver Tene Waitere and was originally located on Tongariro North Domain at the entrance to what was then the town's sportsfield.
The carving symbolises Lucy Rongoheikume Reid (nee Rickit), who was a descendant of the tribes of Tuhourangi of Rotorua and Ngati Tuwharetoa of Taupo. The carving commemorates the great Maori leaders who founded the two tribes and how they came together through Lucy's whakapapa or genealogy.
A sign has been erected at the site detailing the significance of the carving.
