Rifle Range Road water main to be replaced

A decision has been made to bring forward a planned upgrade of a water main in Rifle Range Road in an effort to bring a series of repeated bursts to an end.

At its November meeting, Taupo District Council decided to approve unbudgeted expenditure of up to $450,000 to fund the works that were originally earmarked for 2015/16.

Finance, regulatory and infrastructure group manager Alan Menhennet said the pipe had been installed in 1958 and tests earlier this year suggested the pipe should be replaced within two years.

However, due to the recent history of failure, staff are recommending that replacement be made as soon as possible, he said.

It was hoped the contract could be awarded at the council's February meeting with works starting soon after.
