Roberts Street to be tidied up
3 November 2015
The paved area outside the bars and restaurants on Roberts Street is being given a mini makeover in preparation for the busy summer ahead.
Taupo District Council contractors are removing the old phone box and seats and four trees are being relocated. It is hoped this will reduce the clutter and open up the space for pedestrians and diners.
District parks and recreation manager John Ridd said the work was being done to improve the look and feel of the area. We want to make it a welcoming space for our residents and visitors, he said. At the moment it's crowded and some of it is a bit run down.
Work began this week with the removal of the interior of the phone box by its owners, Spark. From today, contractors TR Construction are on site removing the phone box frame, seats and tree grates, before laying some cobbles to finish off. The work is expected to take about a week.
Mr Ridd said work would begin at 4am each day so contractors were finished by 11am each day to make way for the lunch time rush. Council staff had discussed the upgrade of the area with the surrounding businesses that were affected by the work.
