Rural New Zealand like you've never seen it
21 September 2015
A new exhibition by impressionist oil painter Don Hill will showcase New Zealand's rural and high country landscape in a new light this month.
The exhibition, Don Hill 2015, opens on Saturday, September 26 at Taupo Museum in the main gallery and features work inspired by the country's natural landscape. He is largely self-taught but also studied with the well-known Belgium-born New Zealand painter Gaston de Vel.
Hill was born in Woodville and left school at 15 to work on a dairy farm. In the early days of his painting, he did it as a hobby. He spent time living in Taupo in the 1990s and held several successful joint exhibitions at Taupo Museum during that time. He said it gave him much needed confidence in his art and he eventually moved to Whanganui to paint full time, which he has been doing for the last 17 years.
Library and museum manager Luisa Haines said Hill was well regarded for his ability to use oil painting to portray horses, vast landscapes, water, reflections and mountains.
We have hosted five Don Hill exhibitions in the past so we know he is a popular artist with the Taupo District community, Ms Haines said. It will be great to have Hill's work return for 2015. I am sure plenty of local art fans are looking forward to it.
The exhibition will be Hill's sixth at Taupo Museum and runs from September 26 to November 2 in the main gallery. Taupo Museum is open seven days from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free to children and Taupo District residents with proof of address.
