Safety improvements for Lake Terrace
4 August 2014
Community concerns about pedestrian safety on Lake Terrace will see new safety measures being taken along a busy section of the road.
Work begins this week and includes the construction of two pedestrian islands on Lake Terrace near Rainbow Point Drive and Hawai Street, and the improvement of speed limit signage near Rainbow Drive. This will also include the extension of the kerb to encourage slower speeds.
Contractors TR Construction are implementing the measures to calm traffic on Lake Terrace between Rainbow Point and the Two Mile Bay after the council agreed to it at its June meeting. Contractors will start on the pedestrian refuge islands this week, weather permitting.
Mayor David Trewavas said the work to slow traffic should make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The community has been calling for work to be done on this section of road for a long time so it's great to be able to do something positive about it, he said. The road is officially a state highway controlled by the New Zealand Transport Agency, but the council has been working with NZTA to allow safety work to be done.
Infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said TR Construction was an experienced contractor who had carried out similar work successfully in the past. We hope to have the safety improvements done within the next two months or so, he said.
The cost of the work is expected to be about $60,000.
