Spruce up for Taupo intersections
6 May 2015
Four major intersections in Taupo are set for a revamp after safety concerns were raised about overgrown gardens obstructing motorists' views.
The intersections are at Ruapehu and Roberts streets, Ruapehu and Tamamutu streets, Gascoigne and Tamamutu streets and Tongariro and Tamamutu streets.
District parks and recreation manager John Ridd said the removal of large trees and foliage at the intersections would improve pedestrian visibility and safety. Police had raised some concerns about the trees blocking views for road users and CCTV cameras.
The gardens around the intersections were also about 20 years old and due for an upgrade. We want to inject some new life into these intersections and make them attractive while making the community safer, Mr Ridd said.
The gardens around the intersections will be demolished by council staff and replaced with lower, less intrusive planted areas and appropriate trees and plants. Larger mature trees will be kept where possible. Initial designs feature modern timber, stone and concrete structures to house the new gardens.
The work is expected to cost about $230,000 and is covered by the budget for improvements to the central business district. The council is currently out for tender for the work, with a recommendation expected to be made to councillors in June.
Work is tentatively planned to start in July and be completed by Christmas.
