Turangi skate park and play area opens
5 February 2014
The opening of the new Turangi skate park and play area has been brought forward a day to celebrate the youths' love for the project.
The play area will be finished in time for the opening on Friday, February 14, Valentine's Day, and a celebration will be held from 4pm-7pm.
Strategic relationships advisor Cornelia Dempsey said it was clear Turangi youth loved the new area and opening it early was a reflection of that. The celebration was to recognise the hard work Turangi youth had put in to making it happen. "This project has been a long time coming and the youth have had direct input into the final product," she said. "It's fantastic that Turangi youth can impact on the future of their town in a positive way, and we want to celebrate that."
The event will feature a DJ, live music, a skate competition, sausage sizzle, bouncy castle, games and prizes. There will also be a bombing competition in the nearby Genesis Energy Turangi Aquatic Centre and plenty of other entertainment. Celebrations will take place at the skate park and play area in Te Kapua Park in Turangi.
The creation of the play area was part of the three-stage Turangi revitalisation project which began with the upgrade of the entrance into town last year. It will include two 4.5m-high swings, a hammock, an existing rope climbing structure that has been relocated to the site and extensive landscaping.
